Reviews

Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebbecca Hall) move from California to Chicago after Simon lands a great new job as a sales executive at a billion dollar company. This gives the couple an opportunity to start a new life and forget problems of the past. Just after moving in they meet a quirky man (Joel Edgerton) who claims to be an old school friend of Simons, however it soon becomes apparent that Gordo is holding a terrible secret that is going to turn their lives upside down.

"The Gift" is a thrillingly cringing (in a good way) movie that constantly keeps you wondering just what Gordo is going to do next. The film is reminiscent of the 1991 movie "Cape Fear" starring Robert De Niro, with an ending that you will not see coming (well at least I didn't anyway). What this movie teaches the viewer is that you should never judge people on their first impressions, that time does not always heal and may come back haunt you. Director Joel Edgerton did this in a clever way by building character depth which is why one could consider "The Gift" a "proper" film in the sense of the word. While you think one thing of Simon at the beginning the tables quickly turn and by the time the movie is half way through your perception of where the story is going will completely change.

The Gift is easily one of the best movies I have seen this year. A gripping movie that doesn't disappoint.
